Prof Ian Candy, Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK
Ian is a Quaternary sedimentologist and stratigrapher whose research interests focus on the climates and environments of past interglacial periods and, in particular, reconstructing the climates and landscapes of early Human occupation. Ian graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London with a BSc in Geography before undertaking postgraduate studies at the Postgraduate Research Institute for Sedimentology at the University of Reading. His doctoral studies focused on the geochemical analysis of terrestrial carbonates from semi-arid regions.
Much of Ian’s research focuses on the oxygen and carbon isotopic analysis and the microscale study of continental and freshwater carbonates to reconstruct past climates. This has been applied to a range of research questions including; 1) investigating the diversity of interglacial climates in northern Europe, 2) reconstructing abrupt climate change during the Last Glacial to Interglacial Transition and 3) understanding the climates and environments of early human occupation in the British Isles. Current research projects focus on the study of abrupt climatic events in pre-Holocene interglacials and an investigation of Pleistocene humid phases in North Africa and Saudi Arabia, the latter as a team member of the Palaeodeserts project.
